ARMED FORCES MUSEUM REVVED UP FOR STATE “H.O.G.” RALLY

The Museum of the Armed Forces & Archives of the Carolinas (AFMAC) is kicking off their first big community fundraising event with a booth at the North Carolina State H.O.G. Rally 2010, beginning June 17th in Matthews.  The new military museum will be built in Mint Hill at the Park on Fairview, at Route 218, just off of Interstate 485.  With over 250 years of military history, the Carolinas, and Mecklenburg County in particular, have a unique geographical position for fulfilling the museum’s vision of honoring our service men and women, both past and present.  When completed, this will be a fantastic heritage destination for Mint Hill and the Charlotte area, drawing school groups, veterans, day-trippers, and museum seekers.

AFMAC wants to be a part of the Harley Davidson motorcycle excitement and fun.  This is not only a motorcycle event, but three days of demonstrations, food, and live entertainment for the enjoyment of bikers and families too.  The biker community is historically a very patriotic group.  Bikers for Veterans have numerous chapters around the country – you can recognize them by the U.S. flags on their bikes.  Come meet the Motor Maids… women motorcyclists who promote safe riding and positive images.  You won’t want to miss a local quilter using Harley T-shirts to make a quilt.  Children can participate in street chalk art.

At the AFMAC booth “dog tags” much like those worn by members of our military will be personalized and sold.  A special feature will be the signed military art posters by Tom Gallo from Raleigh, NC, and his IT IS…THE VETERAN T-shirts featuring the faces of military men in uniform from the 1700’s to the current war in Afghanistan.  Numerous military souvenirs, memorabilia, and pins will also be available for purchase.  Proceeds will be used to construct a unique military museum honoring men and women from all five branches of the military.

The North Carolina State H.O.G. Rally 2010 will run from Thursday, June 17th, through Saturday, the 19th.  Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday.  The Rally host site is Harley Davidson of Charlotte at 9205 E. Independence Blvd., Matthews, NC, exit 51A off I-485 behind IHOP and the Infinity dealership.  Don’t miss the opening ceremony on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. with a sky-diving event.  Be sure to stop by the AFMAC booth and support the Armed Forces Museum. Additional information about the museum can be found on our Web site at www.visitafmac.org.
