In observance of the National POW/MIA Recognition Day on September 16, the Armed Forces Museum & Archives of the Carolinas (AFMAC) was presented with a bronze plaque by the Charlotte Metrolina Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War. The plaque honors all Prisoners of War and those Americans still missing in action.
The vision for a commemorative plaque was realized in 2010, when the Charlotte Metrolina Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, headed by Commander Ed Halliburton, presented their idea of a POW/MIA memorial to the museum’s directors and Roger Reimann of Zoma Communications. Nine enthusiastic and determined WWII ex-POWs along with Zoma Communications worked together on the design and casting of the large bronze plaque.
The event, held at the Plantation Estates in Matthews, NC, featured the Presentation of the Colors, singing of the National Anthem, remarks by AFMAC President Bill Dixon, the history of the Metrolina Chapter and its members, and the unveiling of the plaque by Brigadier General Iwan Clontz. Brigadier General Clontz, recent commander of the North Carolina Air National Guard and a Charlotte native, addressed the audience about the POW/MIA national recognition day, commemorated on the third Friday of September. General Clontz said, "I am humbled to be in the same room with these brave men who survived their capture and imprisonment by the enemy while serving our country during WWII."
Also present at the event were Robert Becker from Congresswoman Sue Myrick's office; James Taylor, Mayor of Matthews; Duane Gardner, Mayor of Waxhaw; Nancy Moore, Commissioner of Matthews, who also sang the national anthem; Harley Ellinger, President of the Metrolina Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA); Col. Bill Reid from the Korean War Veterans Association; and Tina Ross, Commissioner of Mint Hill.
The plaque will be part of AFMAC’s traveling exhibit and will eventually be permanently displayed at the museum upon its opening in Mint Hill, slated for 2013. |

The Armed Forces Museum & Archives of the Carolinas is preparing to welcome a new addition to the building plan: a 20-foot-tall granite obelisk. Museum officials are proposing building the stand-alone monument in front of the planned Mint Hill museum in honor of prisoners of war and service members missing in action for all American wars and conflicts. The monument, with a proposed aluminum pedestal and bronze plaque, could include an engraved ring at the base filled with ceremonial soil samples from all major American conflicts, dating to the founding of the U.S. Continental Army in honor of all prisoners of war and those who are missing in action. The Armed Forces Museum & Archives of the Carolinas (AFMAC) welcomes an exciting new addition to the building plan. The proposed memorial created by Roger Reimann of Zoma Communications, is a stand-alone monument dedicated to all POW/MIAs for all American wars and conflicts. The 20’ tall obelisk monument will be erected in front of the museum and will become the symbolic cornerstone for all who served and sacrificed. The Charlotte Metrolina Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, headed by Commander Ed Halliburton, brought this idea to the AFMAC directors in 2010. The Chapter currently has nine veterans – all POWs during World War II. Their stories of heroism and sacrifice merit such a monumental acknowledgement, and, AFMAC is grateful for the opportunity to support the Charlotte Metrolina American Ex-Prisoners of War Chapter and provide them a permanent home in the museum. Bill Dixon, AFMAC president, said “This additional monument will pay tribute to the Americans who never returned home from combat and to those that faced terrible suffering as prisoners of war in foreign lands. This will be a reminder to all who see the monument that freedom is not free.” The POWs have agreed to share their real life events that truly shaped American history. They have also agreed to provide personal items they collected during WWII, so that they can be on display at the Armed Forces Museum in Mint Hill, NC. AFMAC invites individuals, VFW and American Legions posts, civic organizations and corporations to get involved. AFMAC needs your help to complete this important heritage project that will be unique to our region as it promises to be a place of honor, preservation and education. The Armed Forces Museum & Archives of the Carolinas (AFMAC) presented its first granite Legacy Paver to a distinguished military hero and Enola Gay navigator, Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk at a recent WWII Living History fundraiser for the museum in Matthews, North Carolina.
This memorial paver will be placed in a prominent area on the “Honor Walk” in front of the museum which will be built in Mint Hill, North Carolina. It was Dutch’s special request that the paver be dedicated to the entire 12-man crew of the Enola Gay who were part of the 509th Composite Group which was in training for atomic bomb missions off the Marianas Islands in the Pacific in 1945. AFMAC President, Bill Dixon, thanked Dutch Van Kirk for his courage and that of the crew for carrying out such a dangerous military mission that changed the course of history, saving a million lives and avoided a ground invasion of Japan. The bombing of Hiroshima, Japan was on August 6, 1945, which brought about the swift end of World War II.
Bill Griffin, a retired U. S. Air Force Chaplain and AFMAC board member, is pleased to present the “Honoring our Heroes and Building History” Legacy Paver Program to provide an opportunity to honor a family member, a member of the armed forces, a veteran or loved one with a purchase of a granite paver. Chaplain Griffin said, “A gift of a memorial granite paver is perfect for birthday remembrances, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, anniversaries, and other special occasions.” Approximately 3,300 square feet around the military museum will be dedicated to the “Honor Walk.” The minimum 8” x 16” sized granite paver cost is $200. A business, organization or club can have its emblem etched into a 24” x 24” paver, bench or wall slab. Corporate sponsorships are invited. For additional information about the Armed Forces Museum and the Legacy Paver Program, please contact Bill Griffin at bgriffin@visitafmac.org or call 704-837-3091. For your convenience, you may view the AFMAC paver form under Attachment (1). To order a paver, you may select Download below to print a copy of the form. |
